Below is more information from Shaw regarding green efforts specific to their manufacturing processes. This type of post would never have gotten me through journalism school, but I do want to get as much information out as possible. Informed customers make our lives better.

Recycling and Recycled Content: Perception and Reality

Recycled content – Does not mean that the product can be recycled, it just means the product is made with something that has been recycled.
Down cycling of carpet and area rug fibers – Common with Nylon 6,6 and polypropylene, carpet and area rug fibers are used in non-critical plastic applications and drain pipes. Some polyester fiber is used in carpet padding. These products eventually go to the landfill.
Down cycling to carpet and area rugs- Soda bottles can be melted down and extruded into PET fiber for carpet and area rugs and fiber fill for furniture, mattresses, and pillows. These products also eventually go to the landfill.

Cradle to Cradle” Closed-loop recycling – Closed-loop recycling – cradle to cradle – is the most sophisticated form of recycling. Carpet and area rug fibers are reclaimed and recycled into first-quality fibers again. The process may be repeated continuously, without ever having to take the entire carpet or area rug to the landfill. Nylon 6 is renewable in this closed-loop process.
