Shaw Industries Inc. is the largest manufacturer of tufted carpet and the largest producer of polypropylene yarn in the world. Last year, Shaw’s total sales from its presence in more than 85 international markets topped $4 billion. The manufacturer handles every aspect
of carpet production, from processing raw chemicals to the finishing process. In addition, Shaw sells carpet, rugs, ceramic tile, hardwood, laminate and installation services to retailers and end users.
Shaw was founded in 1967 with the merger of Star Finishing Co., which was headed by Robert E. Shaw, and Philadelphia Carpets. In 1971, Shaw went public and discontinued its commission work in 1977. Six years later, Shaw began selling its products directly to retailers.
By the 1980s, Shaw was the sixth largest carpet manufacturer in the world, and the company continued to expand through a series of acquisitions. In 1987, Shaw made its first major acquisition, WestPoint-Pepperell Carpet and Rug Division. Two years later, Shaw acquired Evans Black from Armstrong. In 1992, Shaw acquired the fiber division of Amoco Fabric and Fibers Co. and Salem Carpet. In 1998, Shaw bought Queen Carpets. This year, Shaw Industries was acquired by Berkshire Hathaway Inc.
Today, Shaw employs more than 30,000 people, including a sales force of at least 1,000. The company is based in Dalton, Ga., and has manufacturing plants in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Shaw owns 373 acres of buildings in its U.S. operations alone and its distribution centers house a total of 300,000 rolls of carpet ready at any given time to be dyed and quickly rolled out to consumers and retailers.
Shaw has 53 manufacturing plants in the United States and Mexico. Of those, almost 40 are located in or just outside Dalton and Cartersville, Ga.
